The New England Chapter of APG (NEAPG) has had an extremely busy beginning to 2010. Its new Officers & Committee Chairs were immediately put to the test. In January the annual Post Holiday Party was held at the home of Melinde Lutz Sanborn with a Pot Luck that included every possible kind of food you could imagine. Many deals were to be had by those that took the opportunity to purchase some used genealogical books that were available. As eating subsided, the Yankee Swap began with many genealogical gifts being "stolen". The NEAPG membership then presented Laura Prescott with congratulations gifts of a gavel charm with bracelet, wine & flowers for becoming President of APG. With bellies full and friendships strengthened, we all left with our genealogical gifts ready for 2010.
Only a few days later was NEAPG contacted by Josh Taylor & Tom Champoux of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS: www.newenglandancestors.org) and asked to participate in their first Family History Day, scheduled for February 20th 2010. NEHGS, Ancestry & NEAPG put on a one-day event "Family History Day" at the Westin Copley Place in Boston. NEAPG had 30 members along with some members of NEHGS that provided over 500 consultations within 7 hours. This event attracted over 700 registrants within 2 ½ weeks & the registration had to be capped at this number with about 350 that were waiting to fill any slots that became available. We look forward to working with NEHGS and Ancestry on another similar event. A big congratulations goes out to all those who volunteered & worked so hard to make this event happen. Our first business meeting of the year was held at the Westin following the completion of Family History Day activities with a majority of membership present. The following day, February 21st, NEAPG sponsored two lectures by Dr. Tom Jones at Boston University. "Correlating Sources, Information and Evidence to Solve Genealogical Problems" & "Writing Genealogy as it relates to the above topic". With the permission of Dr. Tom Jones, NEAPG hired a production company (Barnett Hill Productions: www.barnetthillproductions.com) to videotape and produce a DVD of this lecture. Order your copy of the DVD with this order form. Upcoming events planned are an April 13th business meeting followed by an informal roundtable discussion of one of the Chapters from Professional Genealogy edited by Elizabeth Shown Mills. The membership will gather together again for a June meeting with a tour of the American-Canadian Genealogical Society (ACGS: www.acgs.org); one of the premier French Canadian research libraries in the US, located in Manchester, NH. Work continues on the preparations for the New England Regional Genealogical Conference (NERGC) in Springfield, MA in April of 2011 (www.nergc.org). Tim Firkowski - President NEAPG
